#RentalProbs -- When You Can't Paint!

[Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links.]

Remember when I posted in September that a new series was coming soon called "#RentalProbs" and then I didn't write about it until January? Yeah, me either. Sometimes life gets crazy, I suppose!  I feel like I've finally settled into the new rental house with my roomie, though, and we've already started updating a few things. I wanted to start this series because it can be so frustrating to live in a rental (especially as a blogger/DIYer), but it doesn't have to be! This series will have multiple posts and possibly reader features of rental before and afters if you guys are interested!

First up:

#RentalProbs -- When You Can't Paint!

Not digging those lovely off white or builder beige walls? Here are 10 DIY projects you can do when you can't paint:

1. Bring color in through furniture and rugs.

This might be a given, but I love adding pops of color and personality to my home with bright pieces of furniture. Paint your dresser aqua mint, buy a colorful accent chair for your living room, or paint your dining room table. Another practical way to bring in color is adding rugs! I've found practically all of my rugs at garage sales, thrift stores, and Craigslist for less than $50. You might have bland walls, but you'll at least have furniture and rugs that draw your eye away from them!

2. Try removable / temporary wallpaper.

I write this reluctantly because, truth be told, I'm too chicken to try removable wallpaper. I'm so scared that it would leave a residue or it would be my luck that it wouldn't come off at all. Even so, there are removable wallpaper companies like Tempaper, Chasing Paper (pictured above), and Casart Coverings that make me want to be brave. Has anyone tried removable wallpaper before? If so, leave a comment below!

3. Create your own "temporary wallpaper"with paper.

If you're a chicken like I am, you can create your own temporary wallpaper with bulletin board paper like Shelley at Crazy Wonderful did. My roommate in college basically did this same concept except with wrapping paper and it turned out awesome! This seems like a safer version of the removable wallpaper / fabric option because I know Command Strips work really well and I've never had a problem with them leaving residue or damaging the walls at all.

4. Make fun stripes with electrical tape!

Aren't the stripes above from Effortless Style amazing? You would never guess that the stripes were created with 2" wide electrical tape. Jamie at C.R.A.F.T. suggested using electrical tape on your walls, too, but she created different patterns and shapes with hers! There are so many possibilities and patterns you can create.

5. Wall to wall curtains!

It might sound strange, but you can curtain an entire wall (even if there aren't any windows on that wall). This treatment adds color, texture, and warmth... or it might be your only solution to cover up Spiderman (click on the link to read a hilarious story from View Along the Way).

6. Hang fabric, a tapestry, or a quilt.

Urban Outfitters has a ton of awesome tapestries that you can hang on your wall! My favorite is the Kerala Tapestry (pictured right) because it has a vintage vibe. You could also achieve the same look with an old quilt or create your own "tapestry" with a drop cloth and paint. I suggest hanging them with clear tacks (like I did with my drop cloth backdrop) because tacks have smaller holes than nails (aka less damage to the walls).

7. Create a huge photo mural.

Cover one wall with a DIY photo mural like Wit & Whistle did! I love the way the black and white print warms the space and adds interest to an otherwise plain wall. She even shares how you can create your own photo mural with any photo of your choice!

8. Install a fabric feature wall!

HGTV shares this fabulous tutorial on how to install a fabric feature wall and it totally fascinates me! Select a fabric of your choice, and with the help of liquid starch, you can create an awesome focal wall! According to the tutorial, it leaves no damage on your wall when you're ready to leave your rental or just switch things up.

9. Use vinyl wall decals!

All of the wall art created above were made with (drum roll please)... vinyl! Yes, completely removable vinyl. Classy Clutter designed her own DIY floral wallpaper (pictured left) with gold vinyl and her Silhouette Cameo, while Girl Loves Glam made a simple geometric vinyl design for her wall (pictured right)! For those of you not interested in the DIY route, there are several Etsy shops that sell pre-made and custom vinyl decals like this trendy chevron kitchen blacksplash from Abby's Vinyl Wall Art (pictured in the center). I've used vinyl before, so I know first hand that it doesn't leave any damage on your walls.

10. Cover the walls with art!

There are sooo many incredible DIY wall art ideas! In my own home, I created an embroidery hoop wall art collage (pictured bottom left) and it added so much fun and personality to my living room. I also have a vintage-style gallery wall in my bedroom. If you don't want the commitment of a gallery wall, try a photo ledge like Two Twenty One did (pictured top left), that way you can easily change out the art (and there will be less holes in the wall). You can also make large wall art with a shower curtain or frame wall paper! Can't put any holes in the wall? Lean your art against the wall like the photo in the bottom left!

What would you add to the list? Leave your ideas in the comment section below and I'll add them to the bottom of this post! You can also take a picture of your own #RentalProbs and post them on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag #RentalProbs!

What other #RentalProbs posts do you want to see? Right now I'm planning on:

  • When the floor is ugly

New Series Coming Soon: #RentalProbs

Hey friends! If you follow me on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram, you probably saw this graphic yesterday:

New Series Coming Soon: #RentalProbs

Yup, it's true! I'm going to start a new series called #RentalProbs, because I'm a renter and I have problems. No, but really, I know there has to be other renters who experience the same frustrations that I have -- carpet, blah wall colors, a not-so-dreamy kitchen, etc. Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful for my home, but this series will address some of those problem areas that we all experience, and how you can work around them!

So, the big question is: if you're a renter (or have been before) what are some design/decor problems you've experienced? Leave your thoughts below and I'll address them in the series!
