Before and After: The Kitchen Island!

Sorry I've been MIA this month! Between work and recording in Nashville with Crystal Padilla Music, it's been an exciting, but busy month! I have tons of furniture projects to share with you guys, though, so let's jump right in! In April my Mom and I found this adorable kitchen island at Goodwill for $30! It's a dresser that was converted into a kitchen island (complete with wood top and beadboard back)!

Before and After: The Kitchen Island!

I actually loved the white color, especially since I planned to sell it, but I wished the details would pop out a little more. Instead of painting the entire piece, I decided to sand the piece lightly and simply glaze it!

Before and After: The Kitchen Island!

I used Paint Couture's Light Brown Sugar glaze. It brought out all of the unique details of the dresser and the beadboard. I also spray painted the wheels black (and then sealed with spray polycrylic) because I felt like the gold dated the piece a bit.

Are you ready for the subtle but amazing after?

I had every intention to sell this piece. After all, I had my own kitchen island that I purchased a few months ago! One day, though, this piece randomly wandered into my kitchen.. and I fell in love! So, the old island will get a makeover and head to my craft / furniture booth at some point.

What do you think?

Is it bad that I'm contemplating painting it a bright color like teal or red now that I'm keeping it? Haha!

DIY Recycled Planter with Paint Couture™ Crust and Crackle!

(Disclosure: Paint Couture™sent me products to try in exchange for this post. Even so, all opinions are my own.)

It's been such a long time since I posted a DIY craft project, and I'm so excited to share this one with you guys! A few months ago, I attended a Paint Couture™ painting workshop through my job at Hodge Podge and was totally impressed by the paint line and the other products they carry. Some of my favorites were the Couture Crust and the Couture Crackle! I decided to put them to the test with a fun recycling project! This recycled planter project is perfect for spring / summer gardening, too!

How To Do It:

1. Clean your coffee canisters (or other recycled container). Let dry.

2. Put on the Paint Couture™ Crust. This is super easy to do -- you can put it on with a brush, trowel, roller, or your hands. I did one container with random spots and the other all over. I let mine dry for 24 hours.

(Side note: Paint Couture™ Crust can be tinted with Paint Couture™ paint, too!)

3. Paint your recycled containers! I painted mine with Paint Couture™ Angelic. I did two coats of paint on the red container and only one on the other.

4. Once my paint was dry for 24 hours, I applied the Couture Size -- this is the first step in the two step crackle process. You can apply it with a brush or roller. Once my first coat was dry, I went back and randomly applied a second coat in some areas. You will see in the after pictures that doing this produces different sizes of crackle -- small and large. I like doing this so it looks less uniform.

3. Once the Couture Size has dried 1-4 hours, apply the Couture Crackle. You can also apply this with a brush or roller. The great thing about this crackle is that it crackles itself -- that may sound silly, but I just mean that it doesn't crackle the paint underneath. This is great for this project in particular because I don't want to see the red from my container coming through.

4. Wait 8-10 hours for the Couture Crackle to work it's magic! You'll barely be able to see the crackle, but as soon as you apply the glaze, it pops! I used Paint Couture™ Zinc Glaze over the crackle. I simply applied it with a brush and then wiped off the excess with a cloth. Make sure you work in sections so it doesn't dry before you can wipe it off.

5. Make small holes in the bottom of your container for water to flow out. You can make holes with a drill, or with a nail and hammer. You can do this step at the beginning, too, but I forgot until the very end!

6. Put your plants inside!

Sorry for all of the photos, but I just wanted to capture the aged awesomeness! Now, if I could just keep these plants alive! As I've shared before, my home is where plants go to die.

What do you think!? What would you create with Paint Couture™ Crust and Crackle?
