Repurposed Furniture: Turn a Bass Drum into a Coffee Table!

Hey friends! Have you ever had a project that seems ever-evolving? Well, this is definitely one of them! It all started with a marching band bass drum that my friend Jodi gave to me (free is the best, right?!). Unfortunately, I got it so long ago that this is the best before picture I have of it:

Yes, it had a beautiful purple/blue wrap! I took the wrap off (it's basically a plastic cover that goes around the drum) and then painted the wood underneath. (For more info on how to remove a drum wrap, check out my DIY drum side table tutorial.)

I even gave you guys a sneak peek a longgg time ago:

I left the hardware and the rims of the drum the original white color because it has so much character:

Since redoing it, I've used the drum as the base of a repurposed Christmas tree, and then I added a few details to make it what it is now: a coffee table!

I loved the way the drum looked painted, so I just wanted to add a piece of glass to the top. The drum was well-loved, though, so it had some rough-looking drum heads (the plastic part that the drummer hits when they're playing):

I was going to replace them, but they're rather expensive! My next idea: cover it with sheet music!

You can glue the sheet music down with adhesive, but I decided to just arrange it on top in case I ever change my mind (which, let's face it: that's bound to happen). I found my sheet music at a thrift store, but I know you can find it online as well.

Then, my friend Brooke cut a piece of glass for me at her job, and BAM... it was complete! I paired this cutie with the infamous orange sofa (star of Crystal Padilla Music's Orange Sofa Sessions haha!).

Before and After: The Seagull Gray Dining Set!

Hey friends! I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year's! I was a busy little bee getting this dining set painted for a client before Christmas. It was a lot of hard work, but the end results were oh-so-worth-it! Here are the beautiful pieces that I started with:

I painted the chairs as well, but somehow forgot to get before and after pictures of them!

After lightly sanding the pieces, I sealed them with a spray Shellac. I know sealing with Shellac is not the norm, but I heard about this method from The Purple Painted Lady, and I've found that it works even better than primers in most cases. After the Shellac, I always wait 24 hours before painting with milk paint (because Shellac is oil based and milk paint is water based, it's important for the Shellac to completely dry and cure).

The client wanted the pieces painted with General Finishes Seagull Gray, distressed lightly on the edges / details, and then topped with General Finishes Van Dyke Brown Glaze. Look at the huge difference the glaze made -- it made all of the details pop!

For extra durability from every day wear and tear, all of the pieces were then sealed with two coats of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Satin. The table top was sealed with three coats just in case!

(Side note: I painted and sealed the pieces with my Earlex HV5500 Paint Sprayer. If you haven't tried this paint sprayer, you totally should! It will change your life!)

Are you ready to see the after!?

(Sorry for all of the pictures -- I got a new camera and went a little crazy)

Not to toot my own horn, but I think they look fantastic! They were beautiful pieces to begin with, but the paint and glaze really bring out all of the details.

Here's a side-by-side comparison just for fun!

Before and After: Repurpose a China Cabinet into an Entertainment Center

When I shared my DIY coffee bar and dining room makeover last week, I told you that I moved the china cabinet into the music room. That might sound like a strange idea, but I was inspired by this china cabinet turned into an entertainment center on Pinterest. (Unfortunately, I was unable to find the original source, sorry!) Here's what I started with:

Before and After: Repurpose a China Cabinet into an Entertainment Center
This china cabinet is designed a bit differently, so it wouldn't work for a large TV like the inspiration piece. Even so, it worked for the little baby TV that we have in the music room.  I would definitely suggest measuring your piece first and make sure your TV will fit before making any changes to the piece.
The first step was to remove the door. I removed the molding on each side of the door as well to give the TV a little more space.

I filled in the holes with paintable wood putty. Once it was dry, I sanded it smooth and then lightly sanded the entire piece. I also got a large drill bit (I think it's called a hole saw?) to make a hole for the TV cords to feed through the back of the piece.
My Mom painted this cutie while she visited a few weeks ago and I was so thankful for her help! Once she hand painted the piece and distressed it, I used my Earlex HV5500 paint sprayer to do the top coat. Here she is now!

The Details:

Hardware: the white shabby knobs are from Pier 1 and the pulls are original to the piece
Decor: the basket, coffee sign, and other accessories are all garage sale finds or instruments that we used for decoration.

I'm loving the way the music room is coming along so far! We have our vintage orange sofa, an unique coffee table, and now -- an awesome entertainment center! I can't wait to show you guys the entire room put together!

What do you think? Would you turn your china cabinet into an entertainment center?
