Before and After: The Mint Faux Card Catalog!

Disclosure: This is not a sponsored post. I bought all of the paint and supplies in this post with my own money. I just like to share awesome products with my friends :)

Hey friends! I can't believe it's been a month since I last posted, but a lot has happened in that short month. I'll be sharing about everything I've been up to in the next few weeks, but for now, I want to show you my latest before and after project!

I found this adorable trunk at a local antique store. It was dark and dated, but I loved the framed boxes on the front.

I've been looking for the perfect piece to do a faux card catalog and this. was. it. Don't you love when that happens?

First, I removed the knobs and filled the holes with paintable wood putty. Then, I sanded the fronts smooth so the entire surface was level.

Around the same time, I also ordered BB Frosch Chalk Paint Powder. I had heard great things about it, so I was dying to try it!

I love the idea of Chalk Paint Powder because you can add it to any paint! You're not tied down to certain colors or a certain brand, and that is so exciting for me -- I get tired of painting the same colors over and over again. I decided to go bold for this piece and went with Behr's Chilled Mint.

There's a small instructional pamphlet that comes with the Chalk Paint Powder and it gives you exact measurements for the amount of paint you need (so there's no guess work)! You mix the powder with water first and then add your paint. I used a mason jar to mix mine and it was super easy to do!

After a few coats of Chilled Mint, it looked like this:

I loved it already, but it lost a bit of character along the way. So, I distressed the edges with sand paper and then waxed the entire piece with BB Frosch's Premium Finishing Wax (I used the dark wax).

If you've followed along here for a while, you know that I'm not a huge fan of wax. I still prefer a glaze and top coat for durability, but I was very impressed with BB Frosch's wax. It was much easier to apply, had less odor, and dried harder than other waxes I've used before. It gave the piece depth and character again!

My parents were in town, so I took advantage of my Dad's skills and asked him to install the new hardware (after several days of cure time for the paint and wax).

Before and After: The Shabby Chic Bench

> Styling and photos by the talented Joshua Neal at Hipster Perspective <

Hey friends! Last week I had the opportunity to redo an adorable bench for a client. She bought it at an antique/furniture store 10-15 years ago, which I thought was especially cool because I thought the whole make a bench from a headboard thing was new, but I guess it's not!

Before and After: The Shabby Chic Bench

This photo was taken after I patched the top with paintable wood putty -- the top had some major indents and such from wear over the years.

I sanded it smooth, sealed the wood with shellac (because the seat of the bench was mahogany and I wanted to prevent bleed through), painted it with General Finishes Antique White Milk Paint, distressed the edges with sand paper, glazed it with General Finishes Burnt Umber Glaze, and finished the piece with General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Satin. I think it turned out beautiful (and the client thought so too)!

I love how the paint makes the piece brighter and the distressing/glazing makes all of the details pop! Special thanks to my friend Josh for styling and photographing this piece for me (links to his site are at the top of this post).

What do you think!?

Repurposed Furniture: Turn a Bass Drum into a Coffee Table!

Hey friends! Have you ever had a project that seems ever-evolving? Well, this is definitely one of them! It all started with a marching band bass drum that my friend Jodi gave to me (free is the best, right?!). Unfortunately, I got it so long ago that this is the best before picture I have of it:

Yes, it had a beautiful purple/blue wrap! I took the wrap off (it's basically a plastic cover that goes around the drum) and then painted the wood underneath. (For more info on how to remove a drum wrap, check out my DIY drum side table tutorial.)

I even gave you guys a sneak peek a longgg time ago:

I left the hardware and the rims of the drum the original white color because it has so much character:

Since redoing it, I've used the drum as the base of a repurposed Christmas tree, and then I added a few details to make it what it is now: a coffee table!

I loved the way the drum looked painted, so I just wanted to add a piece of glass to the top. The drum was well-loved, though, so it had some rough-looking drum heads (the plastic part that the drummer hits when they're playing):

I was going to replace them, but they're rather expensive! My next idea: cover it with sheet music!

You can glue the sheet music down with adhesive, but I decided to just arrange it on top in case I ever change my mind (which, let's face it: that's bound to happen). I found my sheet music at a thrift store, but I know you can find it online as well.

Then, my friend Brooke cut a piece of glass for me at her job, and BAM... it was complete! I paired this cutie with the infamous orange sofa (star of Crystal Padilla Music's Orange Sofa Sessions haha!).
