Before and After: The Ugly Vintage Lamp

[Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links.]

I know that I bring home some a lot of ugly pieces of furniture, but sometimes I feel like people have too much faith in me. Let me explain further -- my Mom bought me this lamp at a garage sale:

Before and After: The Ugly Vintage Lamp

One look at it and I thought, "No amount of paint in this world can make this lamp cute."

I mean, you guys know I love vintage, but it's so flower-y and just... bad.

Before and After: The Ugly Vintage Lamp

I let it sit in my garage for a few months until inspiration hit.

Here's how I turned this ugly duckling into a beautiful swan:

1. I removed the hideous lamp shade. It was already cuter!

2. Then, I taped off the parts of the lamp that I didn't want to paint (like the part where the light bulb goes in).

3. I planned to distress the details of the lamp from the beginning, so I did a base color with flat black spray paint.

4. After the black dried, I sealed it with a spray matte sealer. I sealed the black because I only wanted the black to show through when I distressed it later on. Otherwise, you might get some of the yellow, too... and no one wants that.

5. Then, I painted on two coats of General Finishes Persian Blue Milk Paint. I wanted something with low sheen and a subtle color -- Persian Blue was perfection.

6. Once the milk paint dried, I lightly distressed the details of the lamp.

The white still popped through in some places, but it still looked fantastic!

7. I sealed the entire lamp again with a spray matte sealer.

8. I added a new lamp shade (that I got at Goodwill, still in the plastic.. score!).

The after just amazes me:

DIY Lighting: A Chalkboard Light Fixture!

I've come to the realization that I'm not a modern light fixture type girl. I bought a modern light fixture from Ikea's "as-is" section for $9, but I bought it mostly because it was $9.. you know what I mean? It sat in my craft closet for months until it hit me-- chalkboard paint! I shared the transformation over at Feel Good Style and I knew I wanted to share it here, too!

What You Will Need:

1. A boring, old, and/or ugly light fixture. I find these all of the time at garage sales, thrift stores, and clearance sections of different stores.

2. Chalkboard paint. I would recommend using the spray kind.

3. Painter's tape

4. Chalk

How To Do It:

1. Clean your light fixture. Mine had some stubborn stickers and lots of craft-closet-dust... fun!

2. Cover any areas of the light fixture that you don't want to paint with painter's tape. I just covered the cord of my light fixture because I painted it like this:

I'm not sure how chalkboard paint will react with the heat of the light bulb, so I would not recommend painting the inside of the light fixture. If anyone wants to be brave and try it, let me know how it goes. You could also use a low heat light bulb like an LED light or something along those lines to be on the safe side.

3. It's painting time! Chalkboard paint is pretty specific when it comes to dry and cure time, so make sure you follow the instructions on the can. Mine required that I wait 24 hours before even writing on it.. they must not know that crafters/DIYers have very little patience when it comes to projects!

4. Once cured, you can decorate it with your chalk! You can write an awesome and inspirational quote on it:

[Side note: the Lord made me smile the morning I took these photos-- the sun through the trees while taking a picture of "Be the Light" (Matthew 5:14)... what can be better?]

You can also do a fun pattern:

So what do you think?

Here are some ways you could use your chalkboard light:

-- Use it as a craft booth display and write the prices on the light above a group of items.
-- Simply write your business name on it.
-- Put the fixture in your dining room and change what it says for every occasion or season (birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.)
-- In a reading nook, write "read" on it.
-- In a play room, write "play" on it.
-- In a nursery or child's room, write "dream" or a nursery rhyme quote on it.

What would you write on it? Share your ideas with me!
