Mantle Ideas: My New Faux Fireplace!

A few days ago, this is what you would see as soon as you walked through our front door:

It's not hideous, but it's very "college." I was ready for something more grown-up and I convinced my rommie, Crystal, that she needed something more grown-up too ;-)

I see tons of mantles at the antique store that I work at and they got me thinking... I

need

a mantle.

I'm awful at drawing, but I want you to realize just how much my vision became a reality... but better! I scoured Craigslist and found a faux fireplace (even better than a mantle!) from a lady that lived literally 5 minutes away. Normally I wouldn't pay that much for anything, but I had a vision and I couldn't get it out of my head.

Here's how the space looks now:

Squeel!!!!

I love it!

I propped up four small shutters on the top of the mantle and added my

sheet music tree

:

a ceramic bird and scrabble letters that say "fall":

a free picture frame that I painted "Colonial Red" by

Rustoleum

and pine cones:

books and a

paper pumpkin

:

And my favorite part, the mustard DIY fall letters (a tutorial for these can be found on

Crafting a Green World

):

Isn't it just.. lovely?

And so adult-like! I almost felt guilty working on something for my home rather than a piece for

my craft booth

, but it feels so wonderful to create decor that I can enjoy!

Every time I've walked by it today, I yell "I love our fireplace!!"... yes, really.

Meet Someone New: Haley from Noonan Family Art

Hello lovelies! I hope you are having a fantastic weekend so far! As I shared in last week's Meet Someone New post, I'm going to feature different bloggers/awesome crafters every once in a while. This week I'm introducing my friend Haley from Noonan Family Art. I actually went to high school with Haley, but sadly, we didn't really hang out. We became friends on Facebook, though, and we constantly "like" each other's craftiness! Isn't is cool how crafting can kind of bring people together? Kind of corny, I know...

Anyway, Haley's sharing how she made an adorable fall banner with her Silhouette Portrait. Here's Haley:

Hey, I'm Haley! I'm a 24 year old video game loving craftaholic nerd. I've been very happily married to my best friend for 5 amazing years! Thanks to my Silhouette Portrait I eat, sleep, and breathe crafts! Here's how I made the banner pictured above:

Things You'll Need:

1. 4 sheets of craft paper cardstock

2. 3 sheets of random fall patterns

3. 1 sheet of orange cardstock

4. Twine or Ribbon

5. Glue (Any paper glue should work. I used Elmer’s glue.)

6. Silhouette Portrait (Note: I used a Silhouette Portrait to get a clean, even cut out for each letter and banner piece.  The same effect should be obtainable by hand, using scissors… It will just be more time consuming.)

7. Thankful banner by Pebbles in my Pocket from the Silhouette Online Store

8. Pumpkin Patchwork Banner by Pebbles in my Pocket from the Silhouette Online Store

How I Did It:

1. Open your Silhouette Studio Software and plan out the banner.

I had 5 windows open to plan for my banner.
          1st for the pumpkin backgrounds
          2nd for the banner backgrounds
3rd for the pumpkin foreground and letters and leafs
4th and 5th for the remaining letters and leafs

 2. Start cutting all of the pieces with your Silhouette machine. I was able to fit two banner pieces per sheet of paper, and both pumpkin backgrounds on one piece of orange paper. Then I fit the pumpkin foregrounds, leaves and letters on the random pieces of paper, with designs that reminded me of fall.

3. Once everything is cut out, lay it all out on a table, making sure to place everything together to make sure you like how it looks before you glue it.

4. Once everything is glued allow it to dry.

5. Measure your twine out and cut it, running it in between each banner piece so that the twine mainly runs behind the visible portions of each piece.

Now you have a beautiful banner to help celebrate the season!

Doesn't she have the cutest mantle ever, especially with that banner? I just love it!

I'm trying to convince Haley to start her own blog because she posts tons of crafty stuff to her personal Facebook allllll of the time, so leave her a comment and tell her that she should start one! :)

Fall Crafts: An Embroidery Hoop Acorn

As you guys know from the eco-friendly wreath for fall post, I'm super-de-duper ready for fall! I've also become a wee bit obsessed with decorating with acorns. I've shared a Recycled Paper Acorn Banner over at Crafting a Green World and I already have some other acorn projects in mind, too. So... here's a fun, easy, and sparkly acorn project that I think you'll love!

What You Will Need:

1. A narrow embroidery hoop

2. Burlap or other fabric

3. Scissors

4. Recycled cardboard. I used a cereal box.

5. Glitter

6. Glue

7. Hot glue/hot glue gun

How To Do It:

1. Put your fabric into the embroidery hoop.

2. Cut off any excess fabric around the edges.

3. Draw an acorn top on the recycled cardboard. Then, cut it out.

4. Spread glue onto the cardboard. Make sure you thin it out as much as possible. I used a small paintbrush to spread it around.

5. Glitter it up! I mixed three different glitters together -- gold, orange, and red -- mostly because I couldn't find brown glitter. I lovvveeeddd the result, though, because it screams fall!

6. Once the top has dried, hot glue it to the top of the embroidery hoop.

Ta-Da! Now you have a super adorable and sparkly acorn. You could hang a few from the ceiling, hang it on the wall, or use it as a wreath on your front door.

What would you do with a sparkly acorn?
