My Home: Where Plants Go to Die.

While other bloggers and people around the world (maybe I'm being dramatic, here) are showing off their beautiful gardens and plants for spring, I'm mourning the loss of many, many plants that have entered my home. My mom always says that I'll be ready to get married when I can keep a plant alive... I guess I'm not ready haha!

Either I water them too much, or not enough.. or I forget about them. I've even killed a cactus, guys.
(Let's take a moment of silence for that one)

The only plant that has survived is the one I photographed in the Upcycle an Old Chair into a Planter post and the Metal Tin into a Chalkboard Planter post (and yes, it's the same plant).

So, I say all of this sadness to ask.. do you have any advice for me? Share all of your gorgeous garden/plant posts with me, or just give me your advice in the comments below! I need it (obviously).

Metal Tin into Chalkboard Planter!

As promised in Sunday's post, Upcycle an Old Chair into a Planter, I have another unique idea to spruce up your porch or patio for spring (that I also shared over at Crafting a Green World). This chalkboard planter is so easy to make and will make a huge impact!

What You Will Need:

1. A metal tin. This size is like a popcorn tin (the same size as my popcorn tin trash can project). You could use a smaller size, though.

2. Spray paint

3. A plant

4. Drill or hammer/nail

5. Chalkboard paint

6. Painter's Tape

7. Newspaper or other recycled paper

How To Do It:

1. Clean your tin of any wonderful thrift store/garage sale gunk.

2. Spray paint the tin. Several light coats will give you the best results. Even if you're impatient like me, don't do one heavy coat because you will get drips... and no one likes drips!

(Before moving onto the next step, I would recommend letting your paint dry for a few hours or even 24 hours. I waited 30 minutes and my painter's tape peeled off the aqua color when I tried to do the chalkboard section.)

3. Tape off a section of your tin with painter's tape-- this will become your super-de-duper awesome chalkboard area. Then, add newspaper or other recycled paper around the edges to prevent over-spray.

4. Once your tin is dry, drill a few holes in the bottom of your tin (this will allow water to escape from your plant). If you don't have a drill, you can make your holes the ghetto way-- just use a nail and hammer to make holes in the bottom.

You'll need to look at your chalkboard paint to determine the cure time and such. My paint, for example, said to completely cover the area with chalk and then erase it before writing my phrase.

I wrote "welcome" because my planter is going on the front porch, but I love how I'll be able to change it for all of the different seasons/holidays. I also put the planter on an old chair that I turned into a planter (like the one I shared with you guys on Monday). Cute, right?
