Creating an Awesome Entryway with Way Basics

Disclosure: Way Basics sent me several free shelves in exchange for a review. However, all opinions are 100% my own.

Do you remember from the New House Reveal post how my front door opens right up into the living room? It doesn't really bother me except for the fact that my roomie and I don't have any where to put our "stuff." Our keys, purses, etc. end up in a pile on the floor, which isn't the cutest.

Way Basics has sleek and modern wall shelves that are the perfect addition to our entryway. I received a total of 4 shelves, but for now, I'm showing you what I did with one. The shelves are so versatile and are pretty easy to install.

(Side note: their organizational products are made out of 99% recycled paper which makes me even more happy!)

In the package, you will receive instructions on how to install the shelves, wall anchors, and screws. I had every intention of taking photos of the installation process, but these were the only photos I took:

Here's a screen shot though of the super simple instructions from Way Basics:

I really loved that the bracket and the shelf were two separate pieces, which made hanging easy compared to other floating shelves. Even with the level, though, my shelf was a little off, so make sure you double check your level (and have an extra set of hands).

Now our keys can sit in this adorable vintage dish and we can pile our mail in style!

I can't wait to show you what I did with the remaining shelves!

The Rental Kitchen and How to Install Cabinet Lighting!

Disclosure: Westside Wholesale sent me free cabinet lighting in exchange for a review. However, all opinions are 100% my own.
After a month, it feels like my roomie and I are finally adjusting to the new rental house. I hope to reveal the living room and my bedroom in the next few weeks. For now, though, let's start with the kitchen! It's the most difficult room in the house because, well, it's the ugliest.

Without the option to paint the cabinets or the trim, and the lovely linoleum floors, I was worried about this room. I decided that all I could do is distract from the ugliness. I gathered colorful items around the house and made the "Yum" recycled cardboard letters to put on top of the cabinets, but it was hard to see them because it was so dark up there.

Thankfully, Westside Wholesale allowed me to try out their kitchen cabinet lighting. I chose the elco lighting eus8w and they are perfect for brightening up the space! The lighting is meant to be hung underneath the cabinets, but I put mine on top of the cabinets to highlight the decor. I also didn't want to put anything permanent on the cabinets that we couldn't take with us in the future. It's super easy to do and the lights are only $12 each!

How To Install Cabinet Lighting:

1. Once you remove all the lights from the packaging, it should look something like this:

2. The package also comes with the screws and such to attach the lights to the cabinets, and connector pieces to link the lights together. For my installation, I simply needed the connector pieces. The end of each light looks like this:

and the connector pieces look like this:

3. Before you link each light with the connector pieces, you will have to remove the plastic panel on the opposite end of the light. It should just pop right off!

4. With the connector piece, you can now link each light together. I linked 5 lights together and placed them on top of my kitchen cabinets.

5. Luckily for me, we have a small gap at the end of the cabinets where I fed the cord through in order to plug it in. This step will vary for everyone, but if you don't have the small gap like I did, you can drill a hole through the top and bottom of the kitchen cabinets to put the cord through (just make sure it's okay with your landlord if you're renting).

I loved the way it turned out! Don't you?

Before and After: The Outside of the New Rental House!

Hey, friends! I've missed you guys so much! It has been an insane month around here, but I think I'm finally settling in and getting adjusted after the move. If you don't know what I'm talking about, read When God Messes Up My Plans and this update to get caught up.

After everything my roomie and I went through to find a house, I'm super thankful for this home. Even so, as I shared in the New House Tour,  there's lots I would like to do to make it feel more like home. The hard part is finding a balance between making it feel like home and the reality that it's not a permanent home.

We've been decorating and such, which helps, but we finally caved on investing a tiny bit into the outside. Here's what it looked like when we moved in:

I don't know if you can tell, but there are little shrubs hidden among all of the lovely weeds. Again, we didn't want to put too much money into the parts that we can't take with us, so we cleaned up the flower bed area (pulled up all of the weeds/grass) and filled it in with mulch. We also added solar lights around the edge of the patio.

Then, we filled the two large planters from the old house with small shrubs. We also bought a new welcome mat that is oh-so-cute.

I styled a small patio table that I painted with the thrift store lantern, a small plant, and a bunny of hope, too!

As I've shared before I have a black thumb, so here's to hoping that I remember to water all of these lovely plants.

As silly as it sounds, I also bought a Magic Eraser and attacked the front door with it. It was pretty filthy, and simply cleaning it with the Magic Eraser helped sooo much. If you're considering painting your outdoor or indoor doors, try cleaning them first.
(This is not an ad, I seriously love them).

The lawn still looks a bit of a mess (the grass is pretty patchy), but I think it looks better already. Our neighbors have even noticed the improvements -- they drive by slowly and look at it... which is kind of creepy, but still.

We didn't spend very much at all and a majority of the improvements we can take with us. So yippee! I think you guys will find that the key to this house is using what we already have and making it awesome.

Can't wait to share more!
